Diabetic patients are at increased risk of irregular heartbeat

Published: April 23, 2020

Recently conducted research has revealed that diabetes could increase the risk of irregular heart beat known as Atrial Fibrillation, a disorder which may eventually lead to several heart related disorders.  According to www.sciencedaily.com, diabetic patients are at 40 percent increased risk of falling prey to the disorder. The research study also found that the risk tends to rise if the blood sugar is not brought under control. This has been the first study which has tapped onto relationship between atrial fibrillation and the duration for which a person is prone to diabetes. The study has been conducted by a team of researchers at the Health Research Institute.

As per www.sify.com, the group of researchers carried out the study on about 1400 people who had been diagnosed with the atrial fibrillation. Their case studies were compared to that of 2200 patients who had controlled blood sugar levels, with regard to their age, year and sex. The findings revealed that people with controlled sugar levels were free from atrial fibrillation. It was also discovered that the risk of atrial fibrillation takes a boost of 3 percent with every passing year in a diabetic patient’s life.”This heart rhythm disturbance is important to diagnose, because it can be treated with medications like warfarin that can prevent many of the strokes that the atrial fibrillation would otherwise cause.” concluded Dr. Sascha Bublin, lead researcher.
