Bret Michaels and his diabetes

Bret Michaels is a sex symbol to many female rock fans, and even invited many of them into his heart when he searched for love (three times) on VH1s ‘Rock of Love with Bret Michaels’. Even on the show it was clear how much of an impact the illness has on his life, as during a one-on-one date with one of the contestants viwers could witness him beginning to collapse slowly in his seat.
Type 1 diabetes is when the body’s immune system attacks beta cells in the pancreas that know to produce insulin after a person eats a meal. Insulin is designed to move the glucose (sugar) from the food into cells all over the body. The sugar is an energy source allowing the cells to function.
A person with Type 1 diabetes does not produce insulin, and therefore has too much sugar in the blood. An electronic medical record EMR can allow those with Type 1 diabetes to track their treatment, the most common form of which is a regimen of regular insulin injections.
Bret, 40, is open about his illness, and makes a concerted effort to balance his rockstar lifestyle with the disease. He reportedly works out just about every single day and follows a strict diet. He also injects himself three times a day with insulin, and constantly carries around an apparatus to be able to check his blood sugar level at any time. He was six years old when he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
