Charlie Sheen promotes ‘The Way’ and prays for his son Charlie

Founder member of the Sheen family acting trio, Martin, has said he is praying for his son Charlie and hopes one day to appear on screen with him again.
Sheen snr said his son has the backing of the entire family as he bids to overcome his addiction problems. Charlie checked into rehab last month.
During a recent interview he was asked how he is supporting his son to which he replied: “With prayer. We lift him up and we ask everyone who cares about him to lift him up, and lift up all those who are in the grip of drug and alcohol abuse, because they are looking for transcendence.”
The interview was conducted at London’s British Film Institute where Sheen was promoting the UK premiere of his new film The Way, which portrays the story of an American doctor’s 500 mile pilgrimage from the French Pyrenees to Camino de Santiago in northwest Spain where he collects the ashes of his son.
The veteran actor previously worked with Charlie in 1987 on the film Wall Street and has said he would be delighted to work with his son again in future.
“That would be another miracle and we’d look forward to it, very much so,” he said.
The film was directed by Emilio Estevez, another of his three sons and Sheen plays the protagonist Tom. He felt the well worn path from start to finish was a spiritually uplifting journey and well worth every step taken.
He said, “I think people are looking for transcendence, particularly in the West. We seek to touch the sacred somehow. I think that’s why people use drugs and alcohol; they’re looking for some transcendental experience in their lives.”
Estevez said of his latest work: “We look at this film like a retelling of The Wizard Of Oz; Martin’s character is Dorothy, [James] Nesbitt’s is the scarecrow, and they’re looking for the wizard - but instead of going to Oz, they’re going to Santiago de Compostela.”
The Way is showing in cinemas from April.
