Chubby singer Lin Yu Chun might just have his weight to thank for his success

Following suit with many countries across the globe, Taiwan has started a casting show, ‘Avenue to Stardom’, set up like most singing casting shows we are familiar with. And, like other such TV shows, there was a huge, unexpected surprise.
You would not have thought that a chubby, short and not particularly ruggedly handsome 24-year-old with a mono-brow would get on stage and demand such respect from his audience as Lin Yu Chun did when he sang Dolly Parton’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ (which Whitney Houston later also sang) flawlessly.
Hot on the tracks of at first aesthetically unconventional but now uber successful casting show contestants Paul Potts and Susan Boyle, Lin Yu Chun’s recipe for success to become an international singing sensation is clear.
Lin Yu Chun is already a YouTube star, with millions having watched his amazing rendition of the classic love song. What comes next remains to be seen, but what’s clear already is that the man the British papers are dubbing ‘the next Susan Boyle’ has already made his mark. Not to mention that he’s already cashed it in: Lin Yu Chun was crowned the winner of the Taiwanese casting show and won $1 million.
But an unpleasant past is what led Lin Yu Chun to this glorifying moment: he was bullied and teased as a child for being overweight; something that caused him to seek solace in singing in his room.
CSMonitor.com quotes Lin Yu Chun as saying: “Being fat draws a lot of mockery in our society.” The singer went on to explain that he lacked self-confidence because of what he had to endure.
“I now have more confidence in pursuing a singing career,” he said in an interview with AP. “You don’t have to be a good-looking man or woman to succeed. Just be yourself and try your best.”
Another celebrity who also recently learned this valuable lesson is Gabourey Sidibe, the Oscar-nominated actress from the film ‘Precious’. Despite being heavily overweight and criticized for this in some publications, many recognize and respect the 26-year-old for her extraordinary talent.
Lin Yu Chun sure showed those bullies what he’s made of! Is it possible, with Whitney Houston calling off concerts due to a respiratory infection amid rumors she is back on the drugs and back together with her ex-husband Bobby Brown, that we could have found a replacement?
Probably not. But here’s a (not to be taken too seriously) list of reasons of why we like Lin Yu Chun:
- He has a brilliant voice
- He is young and has a whole career (we hope) ahead of him
- He hasn’t had any drug scandals
- We’d love to see him after a makeover
- He boosts the confidence of others, by proving talent, not appearance, is what matters
Many internet fans have voiced their excitement about possibly seeing Lin Yu Chun in a showdown with Susan Boyle. It must just be time to organize another ‘World Idol’. Who do you think would win?
Other celebrities have also battled weight loss, and in doing so, proved the point that a perfect Hollywood body is not necessarily the key to success. These celebrities include Oprah Winfrey, Kirstie Alley, Sara Rue and Sharon Osbourne.

According to Taiwanese most updated news report that I read on the internet, actually Lin failed to win the “Round 3″ (after he had won the Round 2 by singing that “I will always love you” we have come to know about recently.) Yet, in spite of that, Lin is still now feeling encouraged (yet amazed at the same time) by the sudden attention and interest from the viewers and media global wise. And yes, I also agree that as long as one leads an active life style, always carries positive attitude, and does not give up his/her gifted talent or passion for certain healthy hobby only because of some stupid stereotyping, then this person deserve a fair chance and our warm applause. Let’s hope soon our society stops judging people by merely the skin-deep beauty, instead , start to take time and learn how to really appreciate the true talents who have been working deep hard with their constant efforts. Lin was inspired by others, but now he is inspiring many of us! : )
