Country singer great Ferlin Husky, best known for hits like Wings of a Dove and Gone, passed away on Thursday from cardiac problems.
The country-pop chart-popper, whose career as a performer spanned some 50 plus years, died at his daughter’s home in Tenessee. He had a history of chronic pulmonary disease along with other heart problems and was recently treated for congestive heart failure.
Just last year the Missouri native was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and he arrived at the ceremony connected to what he light-heartedly referred to as his “own airline” — more formally, an oxygen tank.
“I want to thank everybody who had anything to do with bringing me into this group, the people I’ve admired since I was a little child.”
The crooner went on to express his surprise at making it into the Hall after all these years: “Some of the people that vote are so young…I figured they thought Ferlin Husky was some kind of disease,” he told music writer Peter Cooper.
At his Hall of Fame induction last year, the singer, who was connected to an oxygen tank he referred to as his “own airline”, said: “I want to thank everybody who had anything to do with bringing me into this group, the people I’ve admired since I was a little child.”
Husky has been credited with popularizing what became known as the Nashville sound, a smoorth, richly textured form of country music; a sound that “gave rock ‘n’ roll a run for its money and forever put Music City on the map,” Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum director Kyle Young said at Husky’s induction.
He is survived by six daughters, two sons and several grandchildren.
