Mel Gibson battles manic depression, alcoholism
Published: July 29, 2020
Mel Gibson is currently making scandalous headlines across the globe, his vulgarities towards his ex-girlfriend caught on tape and their custody battle are the hot topics in the media at the moment.
Statements like: “You need a f***ing bat in the side of the head. All right, how about that?” are currently in media circulation across the globe, with many wondering just how much this Hollywood heavyweight has let his emotions get the better of him. What many don’t know about the actor, is that he has long battled manic depression.
In a documentary about acting school National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Sydney, which launched his acting career, he tells a former classmate about his recent diagnosis.
“I had really good highs but some very low lows,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted him as saying in 2002. “I found out recently I’m manic depressive.”
Whether Mel is receiving treatment for his manic depression, is unknown.
The fact that he’s battled alcoholism in the past is well known, as it was made public by his arrest for DUI in 2006 during which he went on a verbal tirade, targeting the police officers, and making anti-Semitic comments.
“I acted like a person completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable,” PopCrunch quotes the star as saying in his public apology. “I am deeply ashamed of everything I said, and I apologize to anyone who I have offended.”
Mel entered rehab in order to fight his addiction. While there is no confirmation on whether he is still sober, colleagues working on the set of Mel’s latest film claim he was cool, calm and collected.
He “did not drink and he wasn’t going crazy,” a source close to the actor reportedly told People magazine.
Other celebrities who have bipolar are Ben Stiller, Robert Pattinson, Elvis Presley and rapper DMX.
