Morrissey highlights animal abuse in response to Norway massacre

“We all live in a murderous world, as the events in Norway have shown, with 97 dead. Though that is nothing compared to what happens in McDonald’s and Kentucky Fried shit every day.”
These are the words Morrissey uttered in Warsaw prior to singing his 1980′s protest song Meat is Murder and in doing so he lit a fire of controversy which has outraged the public.
Let’s be clear about this though, contrary to many reports the former Smiths front man was not trivialising the deaths of 76 people in Norway, nor was he downplaying the magnitude of those killings. There was no disrespect shown towards them.
He was however highlighting an issue close to his heart and the hearts of many millions of vegans and animal welfare activists who for decades have been trying to expose the cruelty that companies like McDonalds, Burger King and KFC serve up on a daily basis.
Despite all the happy looking packaging, convenience and portrayal of friendly staff, there lies behind it all a very wicked and evil industry which treats animals as an unfeeling commodity which it routinely tortures, intoxicates and murders. Pictures and videos of animals being mistreated are rife but the corporate propaganda machine is always quick to counter by being the reliabe ‘friend down the road’ with new meal deals served up in packaging showing happy cows grazing on bright green grass under pure blue skies.
Cows only produce milk after pregnancy. This is what happens to the babies that are deemed surplus to requirements.
The truth is far removed from that and almost (if not) all of those cows never get to see daylight as they are born into slavery, abused by low intelligence, underpaid, badly treated staff and killed before their time so that the public can enjoy a paper thin beef pattie, garnished with GM lettuce, onion and tomato, and smothered in sugar filled sauce to give it some flavour – all of which is sandwiched inside a sugary, over preserved bun.

“The killing of children compared to KFC & McDonald’s?!!! What an arsehole!”
Another very intelligently wrote, “I’ve been veggy for 22 years. Today Morrissey’s made me want to start eating meat.”
For those too weak and stupid to see beyond their outrage at misunderstood comments no doubt Morrissey will present a good target for their anger, but the 52-year-old singer is right to point out the atrocities carried out by the food industry every day; atrocities which are comparable to (or worse than) those witnessed during the holocaust of World War II.
The saddest part is that because it’s animals and not humans being treated so barbarically people don’t care. One only has to cast eyes towards Libya and Norway to see what effect human-on-human atrocity has on the public’s feelings, yet a cow or pig being slaughtered is just ‘cheap dinner’.
Morrissey hailed the Chinese a ‘sub-species’ last September in reference to their treatment of animals and again in April this year he spoke openly of his discomfort with David Cameron announcing being a fan of the Smiths due to the British Prime Minister having hunted stag in the past.
“It’s a moral issue. Killing a stag is like killing a child. What’s the difference?” he asked BBC Radio 4′s Front Row presenter John Wilson.
Whether you like it or not, he has a valid point.
