Paul the prophetic World Cup octoupus dies

Paul the Octobus, who shot to fame for correctly predicting  the outcome of matches during the 2010 World Cup, passed away in his aquarium at the Sea Life Center in Oberhausen, Germany.

The tentacled tipster became a global sensation amongst football and non-football fans alike by successfully choosing a mussel from one of two boxes bearing the flags of the two nations involved in the next match.

The prophetic cepahlopod stunned the world by correctly predicted the winner of all seven of Germany’s matches, culminating in choice of Spain as the overall winner.

Staff at the Sea Life center said they were “devastated” to learn that he passed away during the night.

The manager, Stefan Porwoll, said that Paul”enthused people across every continent. We are consoled by the knowledge that he enjoyed a good life.”

The oracle’s body is now in cold storage while the center decides “how to best mark his passing.

“We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine,” said Porwoll.

“While this may seem a curious thing to do for a sea creature, Paul achieved such popularity during his short life that it may be deemed the most appropriate course of action.”

Not only will Paul have his own memorial, apparently a range of books and octopus toys will be coming out this Christmas. And most bizarrely of all, in August his agent Chris Davis revealed that there was a record deal in place for an album called Paul the Octopus sings Elvis.

According to the center’s manager, the world-renowned octopus, aged two and half, died a peaceful and natural death. The average lifespan of an octopus is two years.
