Black Friday sales could spark shopaholic spree

Black Friday is upon us and the TV is alight with the latest offers from places like Frys, Toys R Us, Citadel and Camarillo.  While the sales are a great way to get those Christmas presents in early, there are down sides, and one in particular is that they feed shopping addictions.

Shopaholism is the term used to describe someone who has a compulsion for shopping.  Like many other addictions, the subjects are unable to stop themselves spending money on items they don’t need in order to balance themselves emotionally.

The reasons for addictions vary greatly, but the effects on the individual remain consistent across all types.  Shopping addictions, also called shopaholism or compulsive buying disorder, are closely likened to gambling and the consequences are very similar too.

Organisations like Debtors Anonymous are in place to help people with CBD and follow the same 12 step program as Alcoholics Anonymous.

One distinction between CBD and other addictions is that the majority (80%) of sufferers are female.  But the problem isn’t just with people who spend beyond their means and run into heavy debts as a result, it also includes people who spend a lot of time thinking about buying things but never actually do, and people who spend an inordinately long time shopping without spending much money.

Aside from Debtors Anonymous there are certain medications which raise serotonin levels and are emotionally stabilising.

Some self confessed shopaholic celebrities include such prestigious names as Katie Holmes, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Lindsey Lohan and Victoria Beckham who said, “I can’t help it. When I see something I like, I buy it in every color and I buy shoes in every color to match, as well as handbags. If I could, I’d go shopping every single day. I’m definitely a shopaholic.”
