What is holistic medicine?
Published: August 22, 2020
The body works as a whole – it is one organism, and not split into each separate organ or component. Sometimes, when we get symptoms, it’s our bodies letting us know that something is amiss, off balance, and should be addressed. Part of the theory is that when one part of the human body is not functioning properly, it affects the whole being.
What is it?
Holistic medicine is concerned with all parts of the human being, not just physical symptoms for which there is a pill to take to suppress the symptoms. It is concerned with the whole person, with the physical, mental, spiritual and emotions aspects of the human being, and how they are interconnected. Healing.about.com defines holistic medicine as “an ongoing journey of discovery in search of more answers and ultimately; living better, being healthier, and striving for wholeness”.
Holistic medicine is not necessarily an alternative to conventional medicine. Some diseases certainly and undoubtedly require the attention of doctors and available treatment.
Holistic medicine is all about finding a right balance in life and creating a higher sense of wellness and well being.
Holistic medicine stems from an ancient belief that the human – mind, body and soul – should live in harmony with it’s surroundings, like nature, and with itself. Ancient Greeks like Plato and Socrates were advocates of this belief, and Hippocrates famously determined the body is able to heal itself.
Only in 1926 was the term “holism” coined by South African Jan Christiaan Smuts. Here, he basically explained that everything is part of a system that is formed by nature, and that the whole is always going to be greater than the sum of all its parts.
Alternativevet.org describes it as follows:
“Nature tends to form systems. In any system, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The whole is not entirely explicable in terms of its parts. Each system has others within it. Within each system, each part interacts with every other part and is, in turn, acted upon by each other part. No part can be independent of the others and no part can be independent of the whole. Each part is unique, and cannot be compared with another, yet is essential to the functioning of the whole. Each system in turn interacts with every other system. No system is independent of any other.”
What are the treatments?
There are many treatments that can be done and many methods with which the balance can be restored.
These include (but are certainly not limited to):
- Aromatherapy
- Acupuncture
- Ayurveda medicine

- Lots of exercise
- Counseling
- Herbal remedies / Flower essences

If you feel like your body is crying out, and presenting you with symptoms you feel stem from your lifestyle, maybe it’s time to find that balance again to give your body, mind and soul a sense of higher wellness and complete well being.
