Isolation as bad for health as smoking and drinking, says a study

According to a new health report published in www.guardian.co.uk, a number of years can be added to a person’s age if he has a supportive social network. This fact has been brought out by a research that has been conducted over a span of 20 years. The research shows that people who are lonely and isolated are twice as likely to die as compared to the people who have an active social life. It has now been proved that isolation is as bad for health as smoking and drinking. The study was conducted on more than 300,000 healthy subjects. The researchers say that someone may live alone but may still have an active social network. This is why simply living alone is not a measurement for the research. The number of friends, social activities and employment details were also taken into account to do the research.
The new review of the studies took into account 148 studies, says a report in www.upi.com. The study mostly looked at the quantity of the relationships and not on the quality. The research also shows that people who are married are healthy but only if their marriage is a happy one. The study has been originally published in the Medical Journal Public Library of science: medicine. When someone is connected to a group and feels responsibility for other people, that sense of purpose and meaning translates to taking better care of themselves and taking fewer risks,” Julianne Holt-Lunstad from Brigham Young university said.
