Isabelle Caro dies after complications with anorexia
Published: December 30, 2020
French model Isabelle Caro has died after complications with anorexia, an illness she battled with since the age of 13.
Caro recently posed nude for an anti-anorexia campaign, and the images of her naked form are both disturbing and upsetting. The fact that the illness ultimately claimed her life makes it all the more saddening.
Swiss singer Vincent Bigler told the media that Isabelle Caro died on November 17th, 2010 at the age of 28, after receiving treatment for a breathing disorder. He also added that the official cause of death is still unknown.
The reason her death has taken so long to be made public is still unclear.
In 2007 Ms. Caro was photographed for a series of ad campaigns against anorexia, but due to the extremely upsetting nature of the images the ads were banned in several countries.
The anti-anorexia campaign came at a time when opinions on using “ultra-skinny” models for catwalk displays were divided among many fashion houses.
At the time of the campaign, Isabelle Caro reportedly told the press: “I thought this could be a chance to use my suffering to get a message across, and finally put an image on what thinness represents and the danger it leads to - which is death.”
Sadly her own words came back to haunt her, and at the time of the campaign she was dangerously thin, her 5ft 4in tall (1.65m) frame weighing in at a painful 32kg (five stone).
Daniele Dubreuil-Prevot, Isabelle Caro’s dancing instructor told the Associated Press that Ms. Caro had died upon her return to France after a job in Tokyo.
She also said that the model’s family and close friends held a funeral ceremony in Paris last month.
Vincent Bigler, a friend of Ms. Caro, told the Swiss media: “She was hospitalised for 15 days with acute respiratory disease and was recently also very tired, but I do not know the cause of her death.”
