Anorexic model Isabelle Caro dies aged 28

French model Isabelle Caro, who gave anorexia a face, has died at the age of 28 after years of battling the illness.

Caro famously posed naked for an advert designed to make the fashion industry re-think its fixation on size zero. The 2007 “No Anorexia” campaign, which featured the anorexic model, was banned in Italy, according to Reuters.

The images were taken by Italian photographer Oliviero Toscani, who is best known for shooting controversial advertising campaigns for clothing chain Benetton. They showed Caro looking shockingly thin and were displayed on billboards and magazine around the world during Milan fashion week.

She died on November 17, but her family asked for her death to be kept private, Le Parisien newspaper reported.

Isabelle Caro had been suffering from the eating disorder since she was 13, according to the Mirror, and died in her home country after she returned from work in Tokyo.

She had recently been hospitalized for respiratory problems, Le Parisien quoted her friend, Swiss singer Vincent Bigler, as saying.

According to the LA Times, one story quoted her long time acting instructor Daniele Dubreuil-Prevot as saying: “She did not know the cause of death but that Caro ‘had been sick for a long time,’ referring to her anorexia.”

Anorexia nervosa (usually referred to simply as anorexia and whose medical coding is 307.1) is primarily a psychological disorder, which causes the sufferer to stop eating and can eventually lead to death through starvation. According to Medicinenet, 95% of those affected by the illness are female.

Patients develop an obsessive attitude towards food, drink and sometimes exercise as well as a strong fear of gaining weight and a distorted body image. Often, the sufferer will go to any lengths to restrict their calorie intake, including self-induced vomiting (a disorder called bulimia) and excessive consumption of laxatives and diet pills. Over time, losing weight becomes a sign of control over the body.

Some celebrities who have battled anorexia include Kate Beckinsale, Calista Flockheart,Courtney Thorne-Smith and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz.
