Lady Gaga’s pound of flesh

Outlandish, offensive and barbaric are just a few words levelled at Lady Gaga for her latest publicity stunt. Just a few months after being invited to pose naked by PETA for an anti-fur campaign, the 24-year-old pop sensation seemingly contradicted her animal-loving image by wearing a dress which seemed to be made entirely of raw meat.

After picking up eight awards at the MTV ceremony, she appeared as a guest on Ellen Degeneres’ talk show where she was presented with a bikini made of kale by the host. Ellen asked her what relevance the meat dress had and, as quoted on Daily Mail, Lady Gaga replied, “Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgement-free human being on the earth.”

“However, it has many interpretations but for me this evening if we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones. And, I am not a piece of meat.”

But the outfit, consisting of a fillet steak hat, purse, open backed dress and string wrapped boots, which was designed by Argentinian slaughterhouse fashionista Franc Fernandez, has deeply offended animal rights campaigners, vegan and vegetarian groups.

One aspect of this latest attention-grabbing exercise that has been overlooked by many is the risk of E. coli 0157:H7, a strain of bacteria which colonizes the intestines of cattle and spreads through the muscles at the slaughter stage. E. coli produces toxins that deteriorate the lining of the stomach, a disease better known as Hemorrhagic Colitis, which can be deadly to old people and children.

There is a risk of cross contamination when handling any meat and Lady Gaga’s extensive exposure to raw beef has not only potentially put herself at risk but also anybody who has come into close proximity with her while wearing it.

Of course the question still remains as to whether the dress really is made of raw meat or if it’s nothing more than a tasteless publicity stunt. Whichever the case, you can be sure that Lady Gaga has once again got her pound of flesh.
