British Rugby League star Terry Newton has been found dead at his home in Wigan, Greater Manchester. The 31-year-old had reportedly hanged himself in a suicide bid. According to the Daily Mirror, the hooker made one last entry on his Facebook page in the early hours of this morning, which read: “Luv u all but end time xxxx.”
Newton had been issued with a two-year ban from the game in February, after testing positive for a human growth hormone (HGH), and had been trying to deal with the death of his younger sister Leanne, who died from pneumonia last year.
“We are deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Terry’s untimely death,” Rugby Football League chairman Richard Lewis said in a statement.
“This is a personal tragedy and our thoughts are with Terry’s partner, his children and his family at this terrible time.”
Newton, who was father to two children, had been running a pub in Wigan with his father-in-law since his suspension, but missed life on the pitch. BBC News cites an interview with the star broadcast on BBC Radio 5 live in June:
“Initially it didn’t bother me that I wasn’t playing rugby but now watching games it is starting to sink in,” Newton said.
“I’ve made one of the biggest mistakes of my life and I know it is something I will regret for the rest of my life.”
The star has previously played for Leeds, Wigan and Bradford before having his contract cancelled by Wakefield. A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said “there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death”.
Other celebrities who died young include Heath Ledger, Chris Farley, Brad Renfro, River Phoenix and Elvis Presley.
Three stars who have attempted suicide are Sinead O’Connonr, Fantasia Barrino and Owen Wilson.
