Ryan Gosling and Comic-Con 2011 make geek the new cool

Canadian movie hotshot Ryan Gosling is among a host of stars headed to the annual Comic-Con in California on July 21^st. The San Diego based geek affair has steadily gained greater notoriety each year and is now becoming one of the events to be seen at, thanks in no small part to the ambassadorial roles of Stan Lee and Kevin Smith to name but a few.

Stan Lee is of course the godfather of comic books; the man behind Spider-Man and the X-Men which have become so popular in recent years, while the younger but no less successful Kevin Smith penned such excellent films as Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma amongst many and always expressed a healthy admiration of comics through the characters in his movies.

Marvel’s collection of The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Spider-Man and X-Men along with Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchises have catapulted the pen and ink superheroes way up into the stratosphere of cool and comic readers are no longer considered to occupy the upper echelons of geekery.

You almost can’t move these days without some superhero or other menacingly watching you from a billboard, web page or magazine and Comic-Con is the place where it all comes together.

Ryan Gosling’s expected attendance could have something to do with his involvement in the upcoming Logan’s Run remake; the story of a society where old age is a thing of the past (because you have to take voluntary suicide at 30) and everyone is subservient until a little rebel comes along and breaks it.

At 31-years-old you might be forgiven for thinking Gosling is too old for comic books but the opportunity to plug any upcoming projects is probably as strong a pull as anything else. At Comic-Con 2011 he’ll be lining up alongside the likes of Justin Timberlake, Nathan Fillion (Serenity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and a whole host of Marvel and DC big bods who will be keen to flog their merchandise and plug their upcoming Dark Knight Rises or Avengers films.

The world of comics is bigger business than ever with film franchises, graphic novels and countless merchandise items cropping up almost on a daily basis so it’s little wonder Comic-Con is getting so much attention. Talk of yet more films from the tales of such legendary authors as Neil Gaiman, Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis is still heard in hushed tones throughout the corridors of Warner Bros, Universal and 20^th Century Fox and fans hope to see Sandman, Preacher and Transmetropolitan make their way to the big screen in due course – albeit with the right actors, scripts and attention to detail which will bring the characters to life in the most appropriate way.

There’s nothing more dangerous, more savage, depraved or frenzied than a fanboy/girl (complete with badly homemade outfit of favourite hero or villain) suffering the ignominy of his/her favourite weekly turned into a soulless Hollywood doppleganger.

No doubt much news will be revealed at Comic-Con 2011 where Charlize Theron, Colin Farrell, Ryan Gosling and Justin Timberlake will be bringing the sexy back to the world of the comic strip.
