The worst celebrity diets of the year

Published: December 27, 2020

It’s nearing that dreaded time of year where the post-festive season guilt kicks in and we get caught up with the countless thouands in the desperate frenzy to knock off the Christmas kilos and transform our stodgy bodies into the stuff of our dreams. Fast. Now.

Many of us will be tempted to turn to the ‘miracle’ celebrity diets that see the stars whipped into perfect shape, allowing our desperation to lose weight — at all costs — bury the little commons sense we have left after one hangover too many.

Of course the thought of shedding a few kilos in just one week has its allure. It’s even possible. But is it sensible? NO.

Sian Porter, a consultant dietician says: “Sadly, there is no magic wand you can wave. There is no wonder diet you can follow without some nutritional or health risk and most are offering a short-term fix to a long term problem.

“It may be obvious, but if you want to lose weight you need to eat a nutritionally balanced and varied diet with appropriately sized portions and burn off more calories that you consume. In short speak, eat fewer calories, make better choices and move a bit more.

“If you have some weight you need to lose, then do it in a healthy, enjoyable and sustainable way.

“In the long term this will achieve the results you are after.”

The British Dietic Association (BDE) has put together a list of some of the wackiest celebrity diets:

The Blood Group Diet

Celebrity fans: Cheryl Cole is reportedly a fan of this diet.

This diet, which has no scientific merit at all, claims that different nutrients are broken down in the body based on the body’s blood type.

Blood Group A: a vegetrian-based diet with no dairy products allowed

Blood Group B: a more varied intake of food and the only blood group able to “manage” dairy products

Blood Group AB: a combination of diets A and B

Blood Group O: lots of meat, no dairy, no wheat, no grains

BDA verdict: Awful. Cutting out foodgroups is never a good idea. This diet could leaf to deficiencies such as calcium. The reason for losing weight on this diet is essentially because your calorie intake is so restricted.

The Maple Syrup Diet

Celebrity fans: Naomi Campbell and Beyonce Knowles are reportedly fans of this diet.

Maple syrup mixed with lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper. This combo apparently boosts your metabolism and is supposed to be drunk in huge quantities throughout the day, leaving your calorie intake ridiculously low at less than 600 calories.

BDA Verdict: Dangerous and boring. This diet has no nutritional value as far as protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals are concerned. A diet with so few calories will leave you struggliing to function properly and should never be followed without medical supervision.

Cabbage Soup / Fat-Burning Soup Diet

Celebrity fans: Sarah Michelle Gellar is reportedly a fan of this diet.

This diet consists living on a diet largely consisting of cabbage soup and is based on faux-science. No food ahs the ability to “burn fat”.

BDA verdict: It is nutritionally lacking and not sustainable. Weight loss will be solely due to water loss and, no surprise here: restricted calories. Getting wind is another feature of this wacky diet.
