Nargis Dutt epitomized the Indian woman in both her strengths and her weaknesses and was the lead actress in the Academy Award-nominated 1957 movie ‘Mother India’, a performance that won her Best Actress trophies at the Filmfare Awards and the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

She was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and underwent treatment for the disease at a New York hospital. Nargis was a fighter and used to say: If I live, I will go and tell the prime minister that such help should be available to the poor people in every state of our country.” However, when she returned to India after receiving medical treatment, her condition detoriorated dramatically. She passed away in 1981, four days before the premiere of her son’s debut film ‘Rocky’. On the premiere on seat was kept vacant for her in memorandum.

Sanjay Dutt, her son with equally famous Bollywood actor Sunil Dutt, struggled with drug addiction while in high school and after the death of his mother. The constant blame of the media accusing him of being the reason for his mother’s detoriorating health and severely criticizing his acting abilities led down down the path of drugs. His father sent him to a Miami, Florida, rehabilitation center to obtain treatment. He also underwent a treatment drug rehabilitation program in Jackson, Mississippi. Upon completing the rehab program, Sanjay Dutt cleared of his addiction and restarted his career.

Other celebrities who have been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer include Patrick Swayze.
