Liza Minnelli ‘did not tell David Gest she had herpes’

Liza Minnelli did not tell her former husband David Gest that she was carrying the herpes virus, according to reports, which surfaced around the time of their divorce.

Minnelli married Hollywood producer Gest in a lavish ceremony in 2002. Michael Jackson was appointed best man at the wedding and Elizabeth Taylor maid of honour. At the time, Gest said to his wife-to-be: “You make me a complete person…You are everything to me and I will love you for ever,” the Daily Mail cites.

The couple split little over a year later and so ensued what has since been dubbed “Hollywood’s dirtiest divorce”, complete with accusations of assault, drunken rages and murder attempts.

The London Evening Standard states that according to papers filed at Manhattan Supreme Court in New York, Minnelli accused Gest of making her ill and even “trying to poison her with drugs”. He is also said to have made the star restrict herself to eating just 900 calories per day and shouting at her that she was “fat” and “disgusting” by way of encouragement.

Gest, who is 7 years younger than Minnelli, in turn stated that the actress was a violent alcoholic, who bit a security aide, sexually harassed a chauffeur and is carrying a sexually transmitted disease - genital herpes - she didn’t tell him about until they were married.

“David was devastated when he found this out a year after they had been together and six months after they were married,” an insider reportedly told the New York Post.

Gest was said to have been fearful of infection after unprotected sex with his wife during the marriage. He went on to demand damages for anxiety and loss of earnings during this period.

The Daily Mail draws comparison between the fates of Liza Minnelli and her Hollywood icon mother, Judy Garland. The Wizard of Oz star was unhappily married five times, twice to men who were bisexual. Speculation over David Gest’s sexuality led many to believe he would be a poor choice of husband in the first place. Garland was also addicted to drink and pills and spent most of her adult life making headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Minnelli admitted to being “bewildered and terribly hurt” by the events and spent most of her time during the divorce proceedings locked away in her New York apartment.
