Zsa Zsa Gabor to have leg amputated above the knee

According to her husband, Flamboyant and colourful screen gem, Zsa Zsa Gabor was taken into an LA hospital on Sunday where surgeons set about a partial amputation of her right leg.

Gabor, who has kept her age a well guarded secret (although she is believed to be 93), has been in poor health since July 2010 when she broke her hip. Her leg has now been infected around a lesion which has become gangrenous, requiring surgery to save her, said husband Frederic Prinz von Anhalt.

Doctors are said to have warned Gabor that she would die unless she underwent surgery to amputate the leg above the knee. Gabor is said to have been “screaming and yelling” in protest as she wanted to be home for her traditional New Year’s Eve celebration which includes champagne and caviar.

After some discussion she was admitted to UCLA Medical Center where surgeons prepared her on Sunday night for the amputation which would take place today. Her spokesman John Blanchette said that because of her age, Gabor faces serious complications, but doctors say that a successful operation would likely extend her life by a few more years.

Gabor, a Hungarian-born actress is best remembered for her roles in the classic 1950’s films Moulin Rouge and Lili.

Her celebrity status accelerated after her film career and along with her two sisters, Eva and Magda, she became a fixture on the Hollywood social circuit where her trademark greeting, “dah-ling” was accentuated by her thick Hungarian accent.

Her life has been a rollercoaster ride including nine marriages, and even a short jail term in 1989 when she served out a three day sentence for slapping a Beverly Hills policeman who had pulled her over. As resilient (and some might say, arrogant) as ever, she surfaced from jail complaining about the food.
