Smokers found to have lower IQs
Published: February 25, 2021
A study conducted in Israel on military recruits claims to have found a relationship between smoking and intelligence: namely, the more a person smokes, the lower their IQ will be. The study, led by Dr. Mark Weiser from Sheba Medical Center, tested 20,000 young recruits, and concludes that smokers generally have lower IQs than non-smokers.
According to The Straits Times, young men who smoke a whole pack a day (or more) generally had 7.5 less points on the IQ tests than non-smokers.
FOX News reports the general IQ score for non-smokers was 101, while smokers only attained 94 points.
While some may think smoking more dumbs you down, Dr. Weiser says this is not so. He and his colleagues concluded that their research doesn’t suggest smoking gives you lower IQ scores, but rather, that individuals who score lower in IQ tests are more likely to smoke.
So what does that tell us? That non-smokers are smarter than smokers.
The findings of the research are published in this issue of ‘Addiction‘.
Celebrities who have quit smoking include Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, Ellen DeGeneres, and Debra Messing.
