New drugs elevate risk of suicides in epilepsy patients, says a study

Published: July 27, 2020

Certain epilepsy drugs increase the risk of suicide, says a new health report published by www.sciencedaily.com.  The study has been originally published in the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology and concludes that some of the new drugs for epilepsy have higher risk of causing depression and instilling suicidal tendencies in people suffering from epilepsy. Levatiracetam, Vigabatrin and Topiramate are some such drugs. It was also found out that some other class of drugs like Gabapentin Valproate, Lamotrigine and Carbamazenine lower the risk of depression and do not increase risk of suicides in the patients.

The research will be particularly helpful to doctors and people to decide over which drugs to use, says the report published by www.physorg.com. The researchers and doctors are now worried that if people stop taking the drugs due to the side effects, it can be more harmful for them. The people in the United Kingdom General Practice Research Database were studied for five and a half years for this research. Out of the total 44,300 people 453 committed suicide or harmed themselves and 78 people out of them died on the spot or after a month of the attempt. It was seen that people using new drugs were more likely to harm themselves. The doctors have now suggested that people should not stop taking the medicines but should consult the doctor to discuss the issue.
