Rip Torn avoids jail after bank job

Actor Rip Torn has pleaded guilty to charges of reckless endangerment, criminal trespassing, criminal mischief and carrying an unlicensed firearm while under the influence of alcohol. Although he has avoided a prison spell the judge slapped other conditions on him.

The charges came about after the 80 year old movie star broke into a bank; an act he claims was fuelled by confusion and excessive alcohol consumption.
He was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and three years probation, though the sentence was suspended. Torn will have to take random drug and alcohol tests to keep himself out of jail, and he will no longer be allowed to own a gun.
Torn pleaded guilty to the four charges on Tuesday, after originally pleading not guilty on the grounds that he thought the bank was his home. He was however unable to explain to officials why he was using a gun to enter his own home.
Police took the veteran actor into custody earlier this year when they discovered he’d broken into a Litchfield, Connecticut Bancorp branch with a firearm.
Rip Torn was born Elmore Rual Torn on 6th February, 1931 in Temple, Texas, and has enjoyed a varied acting career with a diverse range of roles, most notably as Zed in Men in Black and Men in Black II. He also appeared as John Scanlon with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino in the 1999 release,Insider, and is often cast in gritty roles or as a character with personal difficulties or defects.

Torn has one Oscar nomination to his name, multiple nominations for an Emmy of which he won, as well as American Comedy Awards and CableACEs.
