The son of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver is expected to make a full recovery after suffering an accident on the beach. Christopher Schwarzenegger was ‘boogie boarding’ on Sunday in Malibu when something went wrong, leaving him with severe injuries including a collapsed lung, broken ribs and other broken bones.
The 13-year-old’s mother was on the beach with him at the time of the accident. He was hospitalized immediately in a serious condition. A statement released by his parents states: “While it has been a very scary week, Christopher is surrounded by his family and friends. He is a brave boy and is expected to make a full recovery.”
The couple also gave their thanks to the team of professionals, who made the process of rescuing Christopher run swiftly.
“On behalf of our entire family, we want to sincerely thank the paramedics and lifeguards who responded so swiftly as well as the doctors, nurses, emergency room and hospital staff who have cared for our son. They have been extraordinary to him and to us. We thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers and ask for respect and privacy for Christopher and our family.”
Maria Shriver filed for divorce from Californian governor and former Mr. Universe Arnold Schwarzenegger earlier in the month after it transpired that he had fathered a child with their longtime housekeeper.
Shriver cited irreconcilable differences for the divorce and is now seeking joint custody of their two minor children - Patrick, 17, and Christopher, 13. The couple also have two daughters together - Katherine, 21, and Christina, 19.
“While Maria may not have been as angry at Mildred as she was at Arnold, her instinct would be to protect her family,” a source close to the family told People. “Whatever she did in the aftermath was about taking care of her kids, trying to shield them and trying to minimize the repercussions.”
The couple announced their split in May after having been married for 25 years. “At this time, we are living apart, while we work on the future of our relationship,” they said in a statement at the time. “We are continuing to parent our four children together. They are the light and the center of both of our lives.”
