Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony in Marriage Split

Oh no! I hear you cry. One of celebrity’s favourite couples has announced the end of their marriage today after seven years of what – on the outside – appeared to be marital bliss.
In a joint statement Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony told people.com “We have decided to end our marriage… This was a very difficult decision. We have come to an amicable conclusion on all matters. It is a painful time for all involved and we appreciate the respect of our privacy at this time.”
Lopez and Anthony, 41 and 42 respectively got married in 2004 in a secret ceremony at their home in Beverly Hills.
Whilst celebrity marriages seem to fracture and collapse more quickly than those of us normal folk who have the fallout to consider, there are a few famous couples out there that seem to have found the perfect recipe for a good, strong relationship. Love them or loathe them, the Lopez and Anthony amalgamation was just one of those.
Of a similar age, both of Puerto Rican descent, both Latin artists with a musical background, they had more in common than the often bizarre couplings that Hollywood attracts. Think Jeff Goldblum and his teeny girlfriend (recently split), pensioner Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, Genghis and Chaka Khan etc. We thought Lopez and Anthony had it made. In photographs the duo always appeared very much in love with one another and their body language seemed to mirror that. So it comes as something of a shock to find out that just one year after they renewed their marriage vows, the relationship has disintegrated to the point of no return.
Most of us are unfortunately au fait with the emotional rollercoaster experienced during the death of a relationship. Having to do that publicly must be exceptionally difficult. I’m not saying that they don’t deserve it. If they want the eye of the public on them, then that involves the bad times and not just the publicity shots and interviews that strangely coincide with the release of their new movie, autobiography, album, single, perfume, clothing range, children’s book, prophylactic, chemical toilet, pencil sharpener etc. They can’t just have our attention when they want it. Celebrity is for life, not just for premiers.
The couple also have two children together (twins Max and Emme), and this is where our sympathy should lie. Celebrities seem to produce children at the merest drop of a Philip Treacy hat. Squeezing them out with a speed and regularity that often makes me wonder if famous people have a special accelerated gestation period reserved only for them. It’s probably pain-free as well. And they use body doubles at the moment of conception. Why they procreate so easily and quickly I don’t know. Perhaps because they don’t need to consider money nor even whether or not they need to look after the children themselves because they bring in nannies and tutors and can be back on the red carpet showing off their tits and teeth before their cervix has returned to its former calibre. Having children for them is not the career ending, life sentence it is for normal folk who have to say goodbye to freedom and life as they know it for a minimum period of 16 years, with no time off for good behaviour.

Uh, Marc Anthony has his share of exes, and “former” kids to boot! I’m not sure if his ego can compete with hers - could anyone’s? - but he’s not exactly a good example of monogamy.
