Fish may cut bowel cancer risk

A recent study published in the journal of British Medical Association (BMA) – Gut, reveals that a purified form of an Omega 3 reduces the number and size of bowel growths, called polyps, in people whose genetics make them prone to bowel cancer.
According to the timesofindia.indiatimes.com, this omega 3 (eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA) may prove to be effective as a prescription drug to treat familial bowel polyps, without any cardiovascular side effects.
Topnews.us reports that the study involved 55 patients with high genetic risk of developing precancerous polyps in the bowel which often develop into tumors, making it necessary to remove large sections of intestines. 28 patients were given daily dose of highly purified form of omega 3, while the rest 27 were administered a placebo (dummy treatment).
After 6 months, the results showed that the number of polyps increased by about 10 percent among the patients who were given placebo but the number reduced by 12 percent among the patients who received omega 3 capsules. Moreover, it was found that the size of the polyp increased by more than 17 percent in those who were placed in the placebo group and decreased by more than 12 percent among those in the capsule group.
Omega 3 is found naturally in fish oil.
Celebrities who have battled colon cancer include Sharon Osbourne and Teddy Pendergrass.
Farrah Fawcett died of anal cancer in 2009.
