Low level of cigarette smoke also harmful for lungs, makes way for future lung diseases
Published: August 20, 2020
According to a new health report published in www.sciencedaily.com, infrequent smoking as well as second hand smoke is harmful for lung health. This research done by the researchers at New-York- Presbyterian Hospital has been published in American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. The findings state that even when a person is exposed to low levels of cigarette smoke, he is at a risk of getting lung diseases such as Chronic Pulmonary Disease and lung cancer. This is because smoking or inhaling second hand smoke has a direct effect on the functioning of genes preset in the airways. Function of the genes in the airways changes due to sensitivity to smoke and this is generally the first signal of a biological disease.
The genetic effect on the infrequent smokers might be less but there is a certainty of suffering from adverse health consequences, says the report in www.physorg.com. A group of 121 people including smokers, non-smokers and low-exposure smokers was considered for research. Cotinine and nicotine levels in the urine of these people were tested followed by genome testing to know about activated and deactivated genes within the airways. The research findings claim that even when the level of exposure is less, it cannot be considered safe. Changes in the gene structure signal potentiality of diseases. The research supports the public bans on smoking and explains why people exposed to second hand smoke are put at a risk of getting lung diseases.
